Every month, subscription after subscription of teen magazines flooded households around the country, flying into the welcoming arms of teenage girls too eager to learn how they could fix all the flaws they didn’t know they had. An homage to the commodification and encouragement of teen insecurities, we created Teen Life to commemorate the problematic headlines that shaped too many perspectives, including our own. Ripped from the covers of Seventeen magazines throughout the decades, the headlines are 100% real. For us, they reopen old wounds and internal dialogues about swimsuit shopping, positioning your worth in relation to boys, and being told that your body could only be dressed in specific ways. Looking back, all we can say is that we deserved better than this.
