“My first day of a new job, the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors (who had interviewed me during the hiring process), came up to me and exclaimed, ‘Well I guess I did you a favor!’ That single moment set the tone for my entire time at an organization where quotes like these were commonplace. In what I considered to be my first job as a ‘professional,’ I didn’t know how to handle these comments, most of which were actually made by women. With a nod to the 1960s, an era when women routinely dealt with far worse as they moved intentionally into the workforce, I collaged office buildings with direct quotes, and placed them above statistics about women in the workforce. A comment on the early experiences of my own career as a woman, I wanted to place my experiences in the greater context of sexism in the workplace.” — Maren Nelson
